However I bought a couple of French units,which when they came,weren't Hinchliffe,but a figure range I didn't know. The officers are particularly French like,all slack wrists and lace [sorry all French people] They stand 32mm tall and are made of lead,there are no marks on the base.
Does anyone know who made them?

Not sure- maybe the short lived Citadel Malburians or possibly Campaign figures from the 80s

Is the musket a separate item that you have to glue to the figure? It kind of reminds me of the Warrior Jacobite range British infantry pose, but I looked on the Warrior site and did not see any French listed.
ReplyDeleteFritz- Its definitly not a warrior- as you say no French but also it looks too good. I have several of that range and while the figures are not bad the muskets are useless and of course the bases are squared.
DeleteThe MF tends me more towards a Malburian range and the round base to the 1980 Citadel range but I'm still not sure.

I have some British SYW types in a very similar pose. I bought them at a B+B years ago. I have never been able to id the manufacturer either.

The other vintage-ish Marlburian range that comes to mind is Duncan Mac's Stratagem - but i'm not sure the style matches those either. At first glance i thought it might be Garrison (similar style i think) but they didn't do Marlburian, and it's too tall anyway.
Its a bit of a bugger really.I have done alittle bit of research re the original owner of the figures,and he travelled the world with the diplomatic corps.So I wonder if he had them made.They are made of lead,and I dont think are citadal,they are definately SYW though.
DeleteAbout 30 years ago I went to Peter Gilder's wargames Holiday centre and I bought some Russian napoleonic grenadiers in exactly that position from him ie the musket craddled in the right shoulder. Years later I wrote to Hincliffe and asked if they had any more and they said they had never heard of the figure. They were definately done by Mr Gilder and had round bases. I just wonder whether this was another of his sculpts which somehow never reached the catalogue.

Thanks Guy, I have managed to decipher th writing on the base,and its reads, MF1,MF2,MF3,MF4. Now the faces are very well done,more like an early Citidal,but actually finer. I collecy Hinchliffe,and I dont think Peter Gilder would have been bothered to put that much detail in the faces,he was a broad stroke man. I whave now touched up one unit and intend to post some photos on the blog.I think I will hold a competition with a prize.
DeleteI have a few Gilder non-commercial 'specials' and they all have an 'x' scratched roughly on the underside of the base. Your chaps are still a mystery though - which is frustrating as i'd like some myself!
