The Independent Wargames Group. Being a Journal of views, prejudices, ideas and photographs of wargaming not just nationwide, but hopefully world wide. The name IWG was adopted in the early 1980's in response to the then dominant Wargames Research Group, but things have moved on, and wargaming appears to be in somewhat of a Golden Age, so sit back and hopefully enjoy my rantings.

Fencing.
I used to be quite adept at making my own terrain boards and the like, although I never mastered the art of dry brushing yellow? Dont ask me why. Anyway I decided to try my hand at making some compulsory snake fencing, which one needs for the ACW. These images are my first attempt at the fencing, and to be honest they seem okay. Having done some more research I think my fencing is a little sophisticated for the era, and should simply be laid flat roughly hewn lengths of timber with a rock base. I will see if I can make a fist of them later. Being of the age I hoped to buy some value [cheap] fencing but there seems to be a shortage, probably because it is a bit time consuming. I have bought a couple of Rendra fences just to see what they are like. Of course these aren't cheap, but look very nice.

Hello Robbie,
ReplyDeleteI purchased some 15mm MDF snake fencing for my cowboys from 4ground, they look nice once they were painted, I found them abit fiddly to glue (not surprising as I'm all fingers and thumbs when it comes to gluing) but they were fairly cheap for the amount you got in the packet. I'm not to sure if they do 28mm fencing, maybe worth alook? Although your fencing looks really nice in the pictures above, See you on Saturday .
Neil,
DeleteI will check that out, thanks.
I think your fencing looks great, I always seem to think " I can make that" and save the money for figures which I can't but for the amount of time it takes to actually make and finish a piece of terrain I should probably just have bought something!
ReplyDeleteBest Iain
Ditto on all accounts!
DeleteIts always a time thing with wargamers, which explains why so many small companies have sprung up. I did enjoy having a crack at the fences though.
DeleteYou've done a really good job there Robbie, you are right to be pleased.
ReplyDeleteThanks Chris, just now and again it is nice making something. Must be from my Meccano childhood.

ReplyDeleteThis next picture is my favorite of the doggy windows. It reminds me of those things at the zoo for the groundhogs. I'm not sure how attractive they'd look in person but they are cute! I'm also not sure how expensive they are or how long they'd last. dog fence
