Vapnartak 2019

                                                             Vapnartak 2019
Firstly before I launch into a critique/ review of Vapnartak 2019 can I apologise for the fact that there are no images of the show. Why I haven't will become apparent as one reads the text.
Secondly can I also say I really enjoyed the day, again the reason why I did will become obvious.
John, Neil and I arrived at the show very early 09.00 ish in order that we can get parked near the main entrance and also in order to be able to stand in the foyer where it was slightly warmer than outside where a large queue quickly formed in the cold wind.
As we were standing I spotted a friendly gent in front of me with a lot of boxes of stuff he was wanting to sell in the Bring and Buy. I'm sorry I didnt get your name, it was very remiss of me given as you have actually read my blog.
Being a nosy chap I had to ask him what he was selling. When he opened the box files I saw rows of partly painted Hinchliffe and Mini Fig ECW cavalry. He explained they had belonged to a now dead wargamer who had collected figures. He seemed convinced that no one would be interested in them!      Under the box file was a large but old cassette box [ cassettes were a small rectangular form of recording music etc.] which was filled to the gunnels with unpainted Hinchliffe and Mini Fig ECW infantry. Kismet!
I had made my first and best purchase of the day and before the place was open. That helps explain why I found the day very enjoyable.
We were finally allowed in at exactly 10.00am and not a second less. It seems very important that no one entered a few seconds before the official time. So after a cup of hot tea [quite pricey, but welcome] I began to prowl the halls.
I quickly formed the impression that the show was quieter than last years event and it seemed easier to walk about show.I think the weather may have had something to do with this even though there had been no Armageddon like wintry conditions in North Yorkshire. In fact there was no snow? [Are you reading this BBC]
I made my way up to the Bring and Buy and joined the long queue to wait my turn to file into the heaving mass. I sometimes wonder why I put myself through this ordeal given the risk to body and soul. I hope my grandson appreciates the effort his grandfather made to buy him some cheap Space Marines.
The Bring and Buy was mobbed with large men of various shapes bearing rucksacks that invariably ended up in my face.[ Im a bit of a short arse] That I could handle, but the assault on my nose was a bigger issue, and this year York seemed to have more people in need of soap and water than in other years. It must have been the weather, perhaps their pipes were frozen.
I did buy some Space Marines so it was worth the effort. After buying the stuff I needed? from Dave Thomas etc I decided to check out the demonstration games to see if there was anything that would inspire me.
Can I say I have put on a lot of demonstration games over the years, I know the effort it takes to stage a game. It was one of the reasons John and I retired from such games, its very tiring. So I fully understand and appreciate when people take the time to stage a game.
 However.......
Well the very large 28mm ECW was present [check] Lovely figures, great terrain.
The very large 28mm desert game was present [check]  Lovely figures, great terrain.
There was a very nice Indiana Jones game on show but unfortunately no one seemed to want to explain the game and more importantly for me, how they made the terrain. I must have picked the wrong time. To be honest I was more impressed by the smaller card table games upstairs and yes, even by the competition games. So for the first time I didn't take any images. No doubt someone will have done so, and good for them.
So off to the cafe for a sandwich and some chat to anyone who could suffer my wittering. I felt like the nutter on the last bus home.
I then decided to face the crush of the Bring and Buy again, to check out the new sellers and their stuff. Now here's the thing, the same people were still at the tables selling exactly the same stuff as before. It was very obvious that they were bone fide traders. Other bring and buy tables were actually standing empty, as if last years crush had put people off.
I like bring and buy's, sometimes I will book a table to sell off some stuff at cheap prices, but it is becoming increasingly obvious that some smaller traders are seeing this as an opportunity to set up in a wargames show and not have to pay for a trade space. It doesnt seem right somehow.
After a bit more retail therapy and some more chat to various wargamers I know we headed home, tired but happy.
I enjoyed the show, but then I like any wargames show within reason. Will I attend again? Of course but the York Group should really think about how to improve the bring and buy situation and perhaps redress the issue of traders booking tables. And of course there remains the elephant in the room, the demonstration games that seem to barely if ever change. IWG show rating...6/10.

  1. Robbie I think you're being very generous at 6/10. It was a bit of Deja vue 're the games. I too had a great day out but largely because of the chance to catch up with people. We never did get to discuss the Black Powder move sequence I switched around. Another day perhaps. All the best.

  2. Interesting report, and a good buy in the queue. As for the olfactory challenge you should try Colours at Newbury in early September.... high late summer temperatures concentrated under glass bringing out the worst in our
    unwashed brethren.

    1. What is it with people, have they no sense of smell. I know Ive turned into an old git, but the whiff was worse this year.

  3. I agree with at least the 6/10 rating, Robbie. I didn't go anywhere near the bring and buy. I'd already had my workout for the week trying to get through the great unwashed!Plenty of smelly gits about yesterday! I also concur with Colin with regards some of the games. I hadn't attended Vapnartak for two years and thought I'd travelled back in time! Was good to chat with old mates and your good self of course!

    1. Dennis, the shows are a wonderful place to meet up with people like yourself.I love shows and still get excited about attending, meeting wargamers is a great pleasure.

  4. Must admit I did enjoy the show. Though like yourself didn't take any pictures. It did seem quieter than when i was last there or maybe a little more room. I did notice what looked like traders using the B&B

    1. Neil, I enjoyed the show, but as I have stated for other reasons.I also thought it was quieter and think wargamers had been put off by last years experiences and of course the snow. Did you see any by the way?

    1. John I think they do, I only hope they dont follow your blog because you'll be barred from another show.Usually its because of your up skirting episodes and shoplifting.

    1. Iain,
I sometimes think I am a bit autistic because when I get started on something I cannot let go. It can be wearing at times but sadly thats how it is.But with yesterdays influx of extra ECW figures I have no excuse not to crack on.

  7. Hi Robbie,
I was the chap flogging you those ECW. Your report echoes my own thoughts. I think I said to you I had missed the last couple of Vapnartaks, but those same two large games didn't seem to have altered. Maybe they just leave it there during the course of the year and play a couple of moves at each show. I suppose it would take someone coming along to replace it though and as you say demoing games is a bit of an effort. Can I repeat my plea for you to get some more images of your 6mm up on your blog? The Austerlitz article and the Crecy game were two of my all time favourite articles in the magazines over the years and I'd love to see some more images of the figures! All the best and enjoy the old school ECW! cheers...Sean

    1. Sean, sorry about not being formally introduced. Certainly I will put together some 6mm images. Im never one to not blow my own trumpet.By the way thanks again for the figures and if you have anymore then Im your man. I have arranged for someone to solder some flattened pins onto the cavalrymen who are minus swords. Its cost me some other figures but its worth it. I have also started painting and repainting some of the figures already. I couldnt wait. So thanks again for the sale and I will put together a montage of 6mm.

  8. Grand acquisition in the queue! Your report confirms me in my decision not to travel up to the show. The organisers seem stuck in a rut sadly, as are many other show organisers. We are all getting old it seems...

    1. David,
I must admit it made my day.I have this perennial dream that I will bump into someone who wants to sell their early Wargamers Newsletters at a fair price and I will finally complete my collection. Somehow I dont think that one will ever happen though.

  9. Show organisers do read the reviews. I am part of the Vapnartak team. Thanks for your review. We had about the same number of people through the door as previous years. Approx 1500. We prefer smaller participation games but there is a place for larger demos. The large ECW display is put on by one of the York clubs life members. It is as close to sacrosanct as anything in the show. The desert display is a repeat exhibitor and they are willing to put on a pretty demo. The Tabletop sale is run as a service to get cash moving around the show. We are looking at ways to improve the experience. We will look at the space required and at the attendance of traders in mufty.(Not sure what the answer is with traders yet) As to the olfactory assault there isn't a lot we can do about that. In any event thanks for the honesty and I hope you return next year to score us on what we have altered.
    Thanks
    Nathan

    1. Nathan,
I have every sympathy with anyone who runs a wargaming show. You will never please everyone. Finding the balance is always going to be a problem and has been discussed hundreds of times in wargaming forums as to what makes a great show. Personally I thought it was easier to move around the show this year. Maybe you had been able to spread things about a bit better. If so, well done. As for the large 'showcase' games. Well if one hasnt seen them before then they are a great example to set the new attender. Unfortunately for others who attend every year its becoming a bit of an 'in' joke.Having staged lots of games over the years we always brought a new one to each show simply because we knew that most wargamers usually attend a circuit of shows and we didnt want to display something they could have already seen. But if your club is happy with the display then fine, but wargamers will continue to comment upon it, such is their nature.
As for the Bring and Buy. This recent phenomena where smaller traders are exploiting tables happens at other shows as well. Whats the answer?
I suppose you could set a limit on how frequently a customer can book a table which might deter these people and actually might encourage them to book trade space instead. One can surely spot a trader from someone trying to off load their spare stuff. Dont worry about the jibe re wargamers and soap dodging. I can assure you Salute is far worse.
Of course I will be back next year unless some unseen incident stops me. As I have stated many times I actually look forward to shows and York starts the season for me.

    2. Hi we can spot traders, people booked for 45 minutes with a 15 min turnaround and an option to extend for another session depending on demand. We curate the show and limit traders to limit competition. The Tabletop sale traders are not likely to get a look in on the main show unless they do really interesting and different stuff.

    3. I understand that you limit the type of traders at your show, but I can assure you that at least 2 of the people on the bring and buy were bone fide traders. Now if you are okay with that then fine although it does tend to undermine the ethos of wargamers attempting to off load stuff at hopefully cheap prices and of course doesnt give a good example to the actual traders who will have forked out morse than a small fee. As for you ECW game Ive given more thought to this. Your show used to run a reserve list of games for the show that would be utilised as and when a table became available. I know this because for several years I had the silly idea of staging a game at the show but was put on the reserve list. Now if as you say the ECW game is as close to sacrosanct as possible then may I suggest you do away with the idea of a reserve list. You probably have done anyway but until someone pops their clogs there isnt going to be much scope for a new face staging a large game is there really.
